The first full week in the 2026 CEBL season has finished up and we had a few questions answered through the completed games. Some players and teams have shown up as advertised and others have disappointed. Here are the top five storylines from the first week of the summer.

Calgary In Early Trouble

It might only be two games into the young season, but things are not looking great for the Surge early on. Inefficiencies from their offence, more specifically Evan Gilyard II and Jon Elmore who were tasked to lead that end of the floor. The team’s field goal percentage in these two games on 161 shots is 34%. That is the lowest of the other seven teams that have played that many games (it is also the lowest in the league so far). They have also taken 82 threes, which is an average of 41 a game. That is a little high, even in this three point heavy era. While Calgary will be getting Sean Miller-Moore, Mathieu Kamba, and others soon, will it be little too late for them to right the ship?

Sean East Is Coming For MVP

We’ve gotten exactly what we expected from East II, as he’s led the Brampton Honey Badgers to a 2-0 start. He been efficiently scoring, rebounding at a great rate for a guard, and passing the ball very very well. He is the main catalyst as to why the Honey Badgers have looked so good, even without Jameer Nelson Jr. and Keon Ambrose-Hylton. I very much expect this level of play not only to continue, but get better with others arriving and bringing their talent level up. I can’t wait to see how many more wins he can contribute to.

What To Make of Vancouver

We saw both ends of the spectrum for the Bandits over the last week, as they took care of business against the Saskatoon Mamba, but struggled against the Edmonton Stingers. Jaelen House had an MVP like performance in game one, but had a hard time scoring efficiency in game two even with 27 points. Miller Kopp and Mychal Mulder have been underwhelming. The bench has not provided much production so far during game action that’s been relevant. One of the other bright spots has been the quiet but good production out of Tevian Jones. He certainly looks much more comfortable as a third scorer, rather than top option. There is intrigue about which version of Vancouver will be present the remainder of the season, but there is some speculation that Mitch Creek returns, which would be gamebreaking.

Is Dain Dainja Legit?

Speaking of the Stingers, I wasn’t sure how good Edmonton would be this season. But, if Dainja is going to be a force then they might be just fine. The big man has put in back-to-back over 63% shooting, with 25 points and 19 points respectively. He’s rebounded the ball well so far, and even flashed some good defensive upside. What surprised me the most was his ball handling skills. His ability to get to spots around the rim and score has been quite impressive. The combination of he and Nick Hornsby might be a front court that creates problems for other teams.

Game of The Week: Scarborough @ Montreal

The best game so far in this young season goes to the Shooting Stars and Alliance. Big performances from Myles Powell and Javon Freeman-Liberty drove their respective teams offences. Defence played its part down the stretch with Scarborough getting a few extra stops in Target Time. Quincy Guerrier was somewhat quiet, but dealt with foul trouble. With Montreal having missed Tony Carr and Keeshawn Bathelemy, Guerrier needs to ensure that he steps up to lead the charge. An arguably better start for the Shooting Stars than I had expected, we will see if they can follow it up.
