With the 2026 CEBL season officially getting underway this week, it’s time to preview the first weekend of the summer. In this series, every Friday I will highlight five different storylines to look out for heading into that weekend. Those storylines will consist of players to watch, specific game matchups, and everything in between. So let’s get into it.

First Doubleheader

Friday night consists of the seasons first doubleheader, with both games tipping off at 7:30 ET. The Montreal Alliance are at home to begin the year, taking on the Scarborough Shooting Stars. Montreal’s Quincy Guerrier is the player to watch in this one, as he should make an impact in every facet. Also look out for Myles Powell of the Shooting Stars to fill up the bucket. The Alliance will be without Tony Carr in this one, as he finds himself on the Injured List. Look for him to make an impact once he returns. Late addition Justin Freeman-Liberty will have to carry the load with Guerrier early on.

The other game has the Ottawa BlackJacks heading to Brampton to take on the Honey Badgers. The BlackJacks are coming off a home victory over the Calgary Surge. Javonte Smart was fantastic once more, who looks to cement his early MVP case. This will be the first chance for Sean East II to make an impression for his new club. But without Jameer Nelson Jr. and Keon Ambrose-Hylton, who have not yet arrived, it might be tough sledding for the Honey Badgers.

Battle of The Prairies

The battle of the prairie teams comes to a head early on in the 2026 season, as the newly rebranded Saskatoon Mamba take on the Winnipeg Sea Bears. Unlike previous seasons in which the team from Saskatchewan has not been very competitive, I do see this being a much closer game. The Mamba import trio of Tavian Dunn-Martin, Jaylin Williams, and Trey Townsend should provide a good bit of offence, and some defence as a core. But does it stand up to what the Sea Bears are building? Teddy Allen should be the main face to keep an eye on, but look for Davion Warren to make an impact off the bench. We could also see newly signed Trey McGowens be a difference maker.

Bandit Beatdown

After an impressive opening game on the road against the Saskatoon Mamba, look for the Vancouver Bandits to continue their winning ways in Edmonton against the Stingers. The Bandits showed they have another high powered, fast offence, that is complimented by tough defence. Jaelen House could be in for an impressive summer, while Tyrese Samuel picked up where he left off. Tevian Jones and Mychal Mulder provided more than enough complimentary play alongside them. At least early on in the year, I do not see many teams slowing down Vancouver.

Player To Watch: Sean East II

The 2025 MVP runner-up is back to make sure he finishes the job. He will have the pieces around him to succeed, but in the early stages it will be his part alone. Look for East to try and take over the game, getting to his spots and finding open teammates. Get used to his success because once he gets going, the Honey Badgers are going to be rolling as well.

Player To Watch: Jaelen House

One of the most impressive performances from the first few games came from Jaelen House. Not 24 hours after joining the team, he erupted for 33 points, 10 assists on 61% shooting. He looked absolutely dominant against what felt like a hopeless Mamba squad. It will be very interesting to see if he continues this level of play, or if it was a one game heater.
